The Timescales Behind a Single Decision
The third part of Robert Sapolsky's 2024 introduction lecture. One small choice on a street corner, traced backward through hormones, childhood, genes, culture, and evolution.
A rooster crossing the road to reach a hen is not explained by anatomy, hormones, or evolution alone. It takes all three at once. That same rule applies to something far closer to home: a single choice you make on a street corner.
You are walking through a rough neighborhood and a stranger stops you. "Can I ask you something?" Do you stop, or keep walking?
Seconds and Minutes
A brain scientist would look at the split second right before your decision, at the parts of your brain that control movement and planning, already firing before you even notice. Widen the window a little, to the seconds and minutes before that, and your senses come into it too. What does the stranger's face look like? Do you know this street? Are you hungry or tired? All of that feeds straight into the same brain areas the brain scientist is watching.
Hours and Days
Push back further, to the hours and days before this moment, and your hormone levels matter. Chemicals like estrogen, testosterone, and oxytocin rise and fall in your body all the time. Every one of them can turn parts of your brain up or down, making you more or less likely to stop for this stranger, long before you are even aware a decision is being made.
Years and Decades
Go back years or decades, and your brain's own history takes over. A brain can physically change shape based on what happens to it.
- A frightening past: a person who lived through something terrifying can end up with an enlarged fear center in the brain, part of what makes post-traumatic stress so hard to live with.
- A wide-open past: a person who spent decades traveling and meeting new people can end up with a brain that is calmer and more open instead.
Either way, your past has already reshaped the very brain tissue that is about to respond to this stranger.
Go back further, to your late teenage years, when the front part of your brain, the part in charge of self-control, was finishing its last big stage of growth. How well that part of your brain grew predicts a lot about whether you give in to temptation as an adult. Go back to childhood, when your brain was shaped by whatever the world taught you: is this a safe place, or a dangerous one?
Before You Were Born
Go back to before birth. A mother who went hungry while pregnant can pass on a body that holds onto food more tightly, a change that stays active for the rest of her child's life and can shape something as small as resisting a sugar craving decades later.
Go back past birth and you reach the genes you were born with. One single gene is linked to how easily a person stays loyal to a partner when tempted. Whether you stay faithful in a tempting moment has a thread of genetics running through it.
Culture, Land, and Evolution
Even genes are not the bottom of the chain. Go back further, to the cultures your ancestors built over hundreds of years: how many gods to worship, how many husbands or wives to have, whether the human body is something beautiful or something shameful. Culture gets passed down, parent to child, shaping how a mother treats her newborn within minutes of birth.
Culture itself was shaped by the land and climate earlier ancestors lived in, since different environments grow different cultures. At the very bottom of the chain sits evolution, stretching back hundreds of thousands of years, the slow process that decided, among many other things, how humans pair up and raise children compared to other animals.
One Continuous Story, Not Separate Boxes
So a person stops on a sidewalk instead of walking past a stranger, and someone watching wonders why. The true answer runs from a split second of brain activity all the way back to millions of years of evolution, one unbroken chain that we keep cutting into separate boxes anyway.
Those boxes are not really separate. Talk about a gene's effect on behavior, and you are already talking about the millions of years of evolution that shaped that gene. You are already talking about the womb that decided whether the gene got switched on or off. You are already talking about how active that gene was this morning at breakfast. It is all one story, and the real discipline here is refusing to treat any single piece of that story as more important than the rest.
